How Much Does Attic Insulation Cost?

attic insulation cost

You can save money on heating and cooling costs and improve your home’s year-round comfort. How? By installing attic insulation to Energy Star recommended R-Values. For optimal energy efficiency, attic insulation should be coupled with air sealing. Attic insulation cost varies due to factors such as attic size, existing levels, insulation type, and target R-Value for your home’s location and climate.

Attic Insulation Cost Factors

Attic Size

Attic insulation cost is largely dependent on project size. A professional insulation contractor can measure your space and existing insulation levels to provide you with an accurate quote. The quote will also account for available access points and, if applicable, any windows, skylights or chimney stacks.

Existing Levels

Before increasing your attic insulation, you should measure existing levels to determine how much more may be needed. Also check for any gaps in coverage, tight fittings around attic penetrations, and damp or moldy materials. The latter will need to be properly removed and disposed of.

Insulation Type

There are several insulation options for an attic, including spray foam, fiberglass batts, and cellulose loose-fill. Spray foam insulation not only insulates, but it also seals leaks and gaps, making it an excellent option. Fiberglass batt insulation is both affordable and is suited for DIY installation. Cellulose loose-fill can conform to any space. Fiberglass and cellulose are both composed of a specific percentage of recycled materials.

Target R-Values

R-Value is a measure of thermal performance. The higher the value, the greater its effectiveness. Energy Star recommends a minimum of R38 for unfinished attics in Washington. The way to achieve these values is by layering insulation. Keep in mind that different insulation types will have varying R-Values which may influence cost.
